My wife, Nikki, and I have been married for nearly eight years. We are blessed to have two fantastic children, our two-year son and nine-month old daughter.
Nikki and I are very fortunate to have a large extended family and supporting cast in Branch County . My parents, Chris and Jennifer Stempien, and Nikki's Parents, Ron and Lori Clark, both reside in Branch County and have their entire lives. Additionally, all of our grandparents have called Branch County home for most of their lives.
I graduated from Coldwater High School and the Branch County Career Center Criminal Justice Program in 2007. Thereafter, I obtained my Associates Degree in Business Administration from Kellogg Community College. After graduating from KCC, I attended Central Michigan University and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Organizational Administration. After graduating from CMU, I enrolled in Western Michigan University Thomas Cooley Law School.
While at Thomas Cooley Law School, I received a special award for academic excellence for achieving the highest grade in nearly 75% of the classes I enrolled in, commonly known among law students as a "book award." At the ceremony at which I received the award, it was noted by the presenter that the amount of book awards I received was a Thomas Cooley Law School record. While at Thomas Cooley Law School, I also served as the Vice President of the Cooley Law School Mock Trial team. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Thomas Cooley Law School, ranking 2nd in my class, with a 3.96 GPA.
Prior to going to law school and becoming an attorney, I worked in a variety of professions. I've worked in numerous factories in the Branch and Calhoun County area, obtained my series 6 and 63 licenses to sell securities and investment products, managed a local small business, and managed multiple retail stores in Mount Pleasant.
While at Thomas Cooley Law School, I worked as a Deputy Probate Clerk in Ingham County. I also served as a law clerk for the Hon. Amy Ronayne Krause, Judge for the Michigan Court of Appeals and for the Hon. P. William O’Grady, Branch County Circuit Court Judge.
After gaining admission to the Michigan bar, I worked for the local law office of HaasCaywood, in their Coldwater Office. While working at HaasCaywood, my areas of practice included family law, criminal law, civil litigation, appeals, and driver license restoration. In March of 2019, I was appointed as the Branch County Chief Assistant Prosecutor. Since being appointed as the Branch County Chief Assistant Prosecutor, I have successfully prosecuted felony cases, misdemeanor cases, and civil infraction cases. I have also successfully defended the People of the State of Michigan in both the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court.
Over the past ten years, I have had the pleasure to coach nearly 20 local youth sports teams for Coldwater Community School, including coaching High School Basketball, High School Baseball, and Middle School Football. In addition to coaching, I have served on the City of Coldwater Planning Commission for the past two years and serve as an alternate on the City of Coldwater Property Maintenance Code Board of Appeals.
